To all our valued clients

Please find attached our clinic advice during the current Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreak in Australia.  We are fortunate in Qld to have some planning time before the virus is seen in outbreak proportions as has already been in the case in ACT, VIC and NSW.  Outdoor birds are at risk of contracting the virus from wild birds in the form of inhaled feather dust and ingestion of faecal, reproductive or oral secretions.  We have included some precautions you may wish to put in place to minimise your bird(s) exposure to Avian Influenza.

If your bird lives outside and is required to visit the clinic for an appointment we will conduct the consultation in full personal protective gear and in an isolation space (contained, but separate to the clinic). We have taken these measures on advice from the Department of Primary Industries and The Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists, in response to the current situation in our southern neighbour states.

Sincerely

Dr Vanessa Harkess and The Exotics Vet Team
